It started like every other call from the editors of a magazine, we have a cover shoot coming up, need you to shoot it in the next day or two, oh and we do not have any money. I will be honest I just want to take great pictures so the “no money” part has never really bothered me that much. What did bother me though was that I was shooting two great climbers and I wanted to create images that would showcase their talent.

This past spring we shot Erik Skaden, an Ultra-marathoner with Team Montrail, for Mountain Hardware. We needed to shoot him running in snow, rain, mud, and lots of water. Just the conditions he runs in and what the clothes were made for but like most shoots, Read more

A while back we created a campaign for Corbett Healthcare which featured a rock climber. This was an advertising shoot for an international drug company so we needed to find a location that was not to distinct, easily accessible to our entourage of agency, crew, and clients, and we had a number of shots to do in a day so the camera routes had to be easy to climb since I was going to have to ascend and descend a couple times for each scenario to get the AD and clients feedback. We are half way through shooting a 24 day, 32 image, campaign for Army ROTC. It has been an amazing ride so far and can’t wait to start creating the final imagery. There are so many crazy pieces to this 7×22 puzzle that by the end of the 16hr days my mind is numb. I do not have any final images that I can post but here are some very random out-takes that we have collected from the shoot so far. Read more

As a photographer who gravitates towards athletes I often get asked why do I choose to composite and create images rather than capturing the moment, particularly with sports imagery. Rob Haggart interviewed me recently for an article in outside about retouched imagery in editorial publications. For me it is not about trying to create something that did not happen or fool my audience but rather creating the image that I see using the tools I have. When film was in existence I gravitated towards large format cameras, my favorite was the graflex super D’s. They allowed me to track focus and shoot the action, at the same time being able to have this huge 4×5 negative that I could crop into to give me the long horizontal images I see. Read more

I love shooting underwater because it is a whole new unexplored landscape.
As I was shooting Tahoe sup’s underwater shots I was reminded of what it used to be like to take pictures, by that I mean a couple years ago, back when you we would shoot film; the set up, shoot, and then wait for the film to be developed. In this case though I was stuck in a dry suit and the camera was in the housing with no preview, no way to verify focus or histograms, just shoot and know that there will be something there. This image of Charlie Engle was shot for runners world a couple years ago. It was a last minute shoot, Charlie was going to be in Yosemite with his family for July 4th and suggested that the shoot take place during that time. When you have a chance to shoot an ultramarathoner in a location like Yosemite you change all your plans to make it happen. When I arrived Charlie was just about to go on his evening run and suggested I come along to check out some possible locations. Read more

How I ended up shooting women in vintage bathing suits sitting on top of a B25 still confuses me. That is what I love about taking pictures for a living though. We get to do the craziest shit and call it work. Read more
